Many have asked Why National Thank You Day on May 19th is being promoted and not one of the other days that spring up when an internet search is done to research this one.
The Thank You days that promote thanking people that do good deeds or a particular type of research, and that are promoted by a brand of chocolate or TV show, are/were fun for those that took part but, they don’t support the purpose of National Thank You Day.
Some focus on activities in a country other than the United States.
A couple of the days of Thanks do align with the foundational idea of National Thank You Day but, they are for one state only. Not the full U.S.
Some started out with enthusiasm but, didn’t carry on to a fully acknowledged day that everyone knows about. They haven’t fully bloomed yet.
There are a couple weeks that honor particular groups of First Responders and all that they do.
National EMS week and National Police week are 100% here to stay and deserve full participation across the U.S. Both weeks embody the spirit of which National Thank You Day was created.
Interestingly enough, National Thank You Day, on May 19th, falls right in them both.
A day to thank and honor ALL First Responders happens during a week dedicated to the Police and during a week dedicated to EMS across the United States. A perfect coincidence.
National Thank You Day being on May 19 not only falls in two very important weeks, it also avoids “commemorating” a day of tragedy that a First Responder was a victim of. I doubt any of those people that died in the line of duty would wish the day they died had inspired a day to honor all First Responders everywhere.
May 19th is also far enough into the school year that teachers can fully incorporate educating students about the duties these amazing people dedicate themselves to doing. Teaching a respect for First Responders at an early age may stave off the fear and disrespect that seems to be prevalent today.
May 19th is also far enough away from many major holidays so all attention can be focused on Thanking these amazing people and the activities that are done to celebrate the day won’t be in competition with other holidays.
Enthusiasm for National Thank You Day is growing on a daily basis.
